lawd help ’em part 2

a conversation with one of my seventh grade boys today

boy: miss c. i just want to let you know that if i yelp today, it’s because my stomach hurts.

me (peering over my glasses at him): how about if your stomach is hurting so bad that you are yelping, you need to go home

him: okay

last week, this same kid says to me (in verbatim) “i am having some gas issues. can i step out to fart?”

no lie. i can’t make this stuff up.

Isn’t it amazing that they’re no longer embarrassed by this stuff? I would have been mortified to fart in front of my classmates or to indicate that it was even something of which my body was capable.

Now, it’s like a badge of honor. It especially grosses me out when they sort of lean into it.

Thank god he at least announced it beforehand. I sometimes have to stop therapy to have a discussion about excusing yourself if you have to fart. These kids don’t care. They just let em rip and keep on talking. The stench in a closed room is unbearable.

Oh yes, kids today are proud of their bodily functions, and how they smell. Sadly, it even applies to the girls. My daughter has received more than a few stern looks and reminders to mind her manners. Doesn’t help when she tells me they actually have contests at school. My mom used to slap us if we even TALKED about farting, we didn’t dare actually rip one!
