Just shitty

My child has diarrhea and I don’t know what to do, nor do I know what caused it. It started on Wednesday night and hasn’t subsided. At first, I thought it was due to us beginning to switch her to Stage 2 formula, but stopping that on Thursday hasn’t had any effect. Now I’m wondering if it’s because her molars seem to be coming in. But 3 days of diarrhea?

I’ve given her banana babyfood and pedialyte and she doesn’t seem to be in pain (the diaper rash it caused is healing nicely) and she’s doing her normal food grazing. She only had fever once Friday morning by motrin took care o that

Mommies, help!

You are doing the right things.. BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) is always what they say for diarrhea.. the teething could do it.. it could be a virus, even with no fever.. or teething.. as long as she is continuing to eat and drink, and she isn’t having an excessive number of diaper changes, you shouldn’t have to worry about dehydration. I would say keep up with the bananas (even try smooshing some real bananas a little for her, giving a more solid consistency). Does she get baby rice cereal mixed in with formula? (My brain cramps up when I try to remember at what age kids start solid foods..) That might help some too. If she pops a fever or starts being lethargic or won’t eat or drink, I would take her to the pediatrician.

Also if her poop smells very, very bad (like “clear the room bad”) it can be indicative of internal parasites.. which it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY she has.. as an international adoptive mom, we deal with stuff like giardia all the time when our kids come home, but most “normal” moms never come into contact with it.. it is very treatable, but a big pain.

She’s pooping up to 4 diapers a day but it doesn’t smell bad. Which is why she had the diaper rash b/c it didnt smell like anything so I just thought she was generally fussy overnight.

She fully eats table food now and will try the other things you suggested. I also got her some pedialyte too

Thanks for the advice. I guess it’s going to be a shitty weekend.

Yogurt with active cultures. It helps get the intestinal bacteria balance back in line. And rice cereal in the bottle. whole grain oatmeal (the kind you cook is better than instant), Oyster crackers, and toast with a dab of peanut butter. And avoid juice!
    Hope all is well soon!

thanks for those ideas too. her formula has active cultures in it but i can pick up some extra– it won’t hurt. and i’ll try the rice cereal in her bottle.

she’s finacky with oatmeal but i think she’ll enjoy oyster crackers.

is peanut butter safe to give a 1 year old (though we accidentally did a month ago and she didnt have any reactions).

It has been along time for me having little ones. However I do remember having this same issue with one of my son’s… solution: about a teaspoon of flour in a cup of water.

Get that crazy look offa your face1\! My grandmother gave it to him … and it worked. I know it is an ancient remedy…but it works

I hope your LA feels better soon

Along the lines of what rachel bk said, you could also do powdered probiotics to help re-balance the flora.

Thanks! I’m going to need to get some more, preferably not from Whole Paychecks though 🙂
