the deed is done

The hair saga that is.

I went ahead and relaxed it. I was tired of all the back and forth, and realized that a huge motivation not to relax was fear. Fear about what others would think, mostly. So I said eff it. I’m doing this for me and for my convenience. And I like the way straight hair looks. And curly hair and kinky hair and locked hair and short hair.. you get the point– I don’t see hair in a hierarchy of beauty.

So yesterday, A and I went off to Sally’s to get the necessary supplies. I didn’t want to spend a fortune in a beauty salon because I knew they would upcharge me for hair length and the fact that it was “virgin” hair. A used to self-relax and I trust her with my hair. We got home, she did the deed and I was so happy with how easy it was to manage afterwards. Usually it takes almost an hour to blow dry it. Now, 10 minutes. I ran a flat-iron through it after (though I realize I didn’t need to) and it took all of 5 minutes on medium heat. Detangling? What’s that!

Now my hair challenge is to learn more about caring for relaxed hair because I know I’m going to need to do some extra things to keep it healthy, like using protein treatments, babying my ends and edges even more, etc. But I’m sooooo excited with the way it turned out. Still bouncy and still retaining my length. We shall see what the coming months bring!
