love, life, and the pursuit of liberation
This evening I was on the train finally relaxing after a long day of delivering professional development. I was feeling a bit of peace and the comfort that comes with a job well done. Soon, a man asked me to shift my belongings so he could share my seat. We began a conversation about what I do, and I attempted to ignore the subtle flirtation that I saw brewing. However, the stranger remained a gentleman and remarked that my brains and passion was as strong as my beauty. I’ll take that. Towards the end of the conversation, he offered seven words that shifted the intense internal agitation that I’ve been wrestling with for the past few weeks.
“You are the light of the world.”- Matthew 5:14
After quizzing me on the source of the quote and being pleased that I at least knew it was scripture, even though I couldn’t give the exact reference, the stranger went on to remind me that the key word is are. “It doesn’t say ‘be’ or ‘try’; you already are and that’s all you need to know.”
In that moment I felt free to accept my own humanity, ebb and flow, highs and lows. I am already one with God and don’t have to earn or do anything to be that.
So it is.
