love, life, and the pursuit of liberation
It’s Friday, and we’ve made it! If you’ve been here before, you know that I like to use this post reflecting on articles, media, and people who have been on my mind this week.
Feature 1– Alicia Keys’ video Brand New Me (see below) is my anthem this year! Check out this snippet of the lyrics and you can totally see how this resonates with this month’s theme of healing.
I don’t need your opinion
I’m not waiting for your “OK”
I’ll never be perfect,
But at least now I’m brave
I know my heart is open
I can finally breathe
Don’t be mad
It’s just a brand new kinda free
That ain’t bad
I found a brand new kinda me
Feature 2– On Wednesday, Elixher published an article I wrote reflecting on Jet Magazine’s 1953 feature “Why Lesbians Marry.” Not only was it refreshing to see how black communities were a bit more progressive in our understanding of sexuality, it was awesome to see how well-received the article was. Jet Magazine even retweeted!
Feature 3– I can’t tell ya’ll yet! I’m dying to share some good news, and those of you who are my Facebook friends may have seen me doing 90s dances across the screen. I’m bookmarking that feature, but know that I’m very excited about some positive opportunities that are opening up to bring me closer to my dreams.
Have a happy, healthy, and reflective Friday everybody. I’ll be back with more thoughts about healing next week.
